Les Tricoteuses
A legend that sprung up in the Terror of 1793, when the guillotine was in full swing. Supposedly there were ladies standing next to the national razor, casually knitting. This was made famous by the Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities, where the names of the aristocrats and enemies of the revolution are encoded in the knitted design.
This myth also reminded me of the Greek myth of the three Fates, the Moirai; Clotho, who spun the thread in the start of life and thus beginning destiny; Lachesis, who decided the length of the thread and thus the duration of one's life and finally Atropos who decided when that thread needed to be cut. It was said that the three fates held more power than the Gods, because no one could escape their fate.
